COIMBATORE: A debt-ridden Coimbatore man, who decided to take up chain-snatching to solve his financial problems, jumped off a building and fractured both his legs in his maiden attempt.
The man, identified as Muthu Balaji, 34, of Vinayagapuram, snatched a gold chain, weighing two sovereigns, of a 60-year-old woman, identified as Kanchana of Amman Nagar near Vinayagapuram.
Kanchana was walking towards a store to buy vegetables along with her daughter-in-law on Thursday night.
Balaji snatched the chain and tried to escape. As Kanchana and her daughter-in-law shouted for help, onlookers tried to stop him. In an attempt to escape, he climbed the staircase of a house and reached the terrace. He could not find a way to escape.
Realising that he would be caught sooner, he jumped off the 20-foot-high building and landed on the ground. He broke both his legs.
The public caught him and retrieved the gold chain from him. He was later handed over to the Saravanampatti police.
A police officer said Muthu Balaji had worked as a machine operator in a lathe. He invested some money in the share market. After losing his hard-earned money, he took some money on loan and invested it. He lost that too.
As he struggled to make both ends meet, his wife deserted him and went to her parents’ home along with their three-year-old daughter.
